Chainflex cable installation
- Mar 23, 2023 -

Chainflex cable installation is essentially important to industrial automation systems. it’s the “throat” of moving components. The drag chain cable allows the transfer of data and power between moving components. These cables are highly flexible and durable. In that case, they are ideal for use in applications that require repetitive motion and frequent bending. One of the most common methods for securing chain flex cables in industrial settings is by using a drag chain. A drag chain is a protective housing that holds the cable securely in place while allowing it to move freely along a predetermined path. In this article, we will discuss the steps involved in installing chainflex cables on a drag chain.

Step 1: Determine the Required Length of the Cable. Before you begin the installation process, you will need to determine the length of the cable required for your application. This can be done by measuring the distance between the two points where the cable will be connected. It is important to add some extra length to the measurement to account for any bending or movement that may occur during the operation. Step 2: Prepare the Drag Chain. Once you have determined the required length of the cable, you can prepare the drag chain for installation. Begin by opening the drag chain and laying it out flat on a work surface. If the drag chain is not pre-assembled, you will need to join the individual links together to create the desired length. Step 3: Thread the Cable through the Drag Chain. With the drag chain prepared, you can now thread the chain flex cable through the channels in the drag chain. Start at one end of the chain and carefully feed the cable through each link, taking care not to damage the insulation or wires. Step 4: Secure the Cable Ends. Once thread the cable through the drag chain, you will need to secure the ends to the appropriate connectors or equipment. This may involve attaching connectors to the cable ends or terminating the wires directly to a machine or control panel. Step 5: Test the System. With the cable installed and secured, you can now test the system to ensure that it is functioning properly. Check for any signs of cable wear or damage, and confirm that the cable is able to move freely through the drag chain without any obstructions or snags. By following these simple steps, you can install chain flex cables on a drag chain with confidence. Ensuring that your automation system is able to operate smoothly and reliably. Remember to take your time during the installation process, and seek professional advice if you encounter any issues or challenges.

The installation precautions

Further, we must conduct with great care the chainflex cable installation and prediction tubes in the power drag chains. We should notice the following basic points:
  • When the mixed flat and round cables are in one drag tray, we should install them loosely next to one another. Furthermore, also install the guide stays between the cables laid side by side. Try and avoid placing different sizes of round cables next to one another. Due to the limited space relationship, we’d better arrange cables one above the other and also install frame stays.
  • Install the cables with guide stays, dividers, or separate hole stays so as to move freely in the drag tray guides. As free space for the cables in the guide stay should be at least 10% of cable 1.
  • Always ensure that the cable can follow the drag trays motions without appearing to be forced.
  • If installing the cables in the drag tray in layers, then it is important to check upon installation that lay the cables in such a way that they do not block each other when the drag tray alters direction.
  • Always install the cables in a non-kinking and nontwisting flat position into the dray trays. Reel down the cables from the reels or drums tangential. Do not lift up the cables in a twisted or looping form overhead. Before the installation, lay the cables in a straight and non-twisted form on a plane surface. The cables must have an additional length of at least 10% of the whole length. So that, these lay freely without twisting in drag chains.
  • In order to lay several multi-core high flexible cables with an outer diameter < 10 mm, we recommend the use of a guiding tube, in which we could lay these cables loosely.  The cross-section of this tube is much larger than the sum of the cross-sections of the cables. For the free movement of the flexible energy conduits, we also must install the guide or divider stays.
  • In case the powerful drag system integrates with the pressure- or hydraulic tubes, we should expand and shrink them under alternating charges without interrupting the functionality of the drag system.
  • In order to maintain a balanced running of the drag chain, it is necessary to ensure that we divide up the weight of the cables inside evenly. That’s to say, install heavier cables on the edges and lighter types in the middle. All cables must be securely fixed at one end of the drag chain. Thus assuring that fasten the cores are secure to one side with the other, open, side allowing enough slack to take up the drag chain’s motion.
Generally, chainflex cable installation requires the cable with multi-layer construction. For example,  425 cores, but to split the necessary number of conductors over several cables.
